A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance
Throughout this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering children and placing treasure under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous gnome he had imagined.
An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be entitled types, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.
Naturally, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
